After discovering our work on Instagram, this wonderful family invited us to reimagine the landscape surrounding their stunning Boulder home. Their vision was clear: preserve the sweeping mountain views, soften the bold orange-red fencing, and introduce a sense of fluidity and movement throughout the garden. Several existing spruce trees had outgrown their space, so we thoughtfully removed them to open sightlines and create a more harmonious relationship between the home and its natural surroundings.
Inspired by the serene elegance of Japanese garden design, we focused on balance, simplicity, and refined detail. This aesthetic guided every choice—from the textures of the plantings to the placement of each stone. We crafted intricate ground-cover mosaics to evoke a living tapestry of subtle color and form. Working side-by-side with our client, we hand-selected every boulder and feature stone, choosing pieces with striking veining, soft swirls, and natural sparkles that elevate the entire landscape.
As a designer herself, our client came with a strong sense of style and intention. What made this project extraordinary was the trust, collaboration, and shared creative energy. Together, we shaped a space that exceeded both our expectations—an elevated, artful garden grounded in craftsmanship and guided by nature.
Design & Planting Highlights
A refined, Japanese-inspired layout — Soft, flowing lines anchor the design, drawing the eye across the garden and framing key views. The composition emphasizes balance, negative space, and the quiet drama found in natural stone and minimalist planting.
Ground-cover mosaics with sculptural texture — A curated mix of low, spreading plants creates living mosaics that shift gently with light and season. These tapestries add depth, softness, and a sense of crafted artistry to the garden floor.
Hand-selected boulders as functional art — Each rock was chosen in collaboration with our client, valuing shape, veining, luster, and character. These pieces act as sculptural anchors—adding timeless beauty, grounding the design, and enhancing the Japanese aesthetic.
Restored views & simplified structure — By removing oversized spruce trees and replacing the fencing and adding layered plantings, the home now feels more open, connected, and visually cohesive with the surrounding foothills.
Result — A Garden of Quiet Luxury & Intentional Beauty
Today, this landscape embodies a refined, modern interpretation of Japanese garden principles, elegant, understated, and deeply harmonious. Views feel expansive, the plantings move with the breeze, and the stonework glows subtly in changing light. It’s a space that inspires calm, honors craftsmanship, and celebrates the thoughtful collaboration between designer and client.
